Small-pet answers that keep every cage, tank and hutch thriving.

A hamster, a guinea pig, a budgie, a goldfish or a bearded dragon — small pets ask for less space than a dog, but they still ask for real money, real room and real years. This hub does the honest maths: what a species truly costs to set up and keep, how long the commitment really is, whether the cage or tank you are eyeing up meets the minimum, and how to clean, feed, travel with and care for the small life in your care. Warm, honest and educational only — every answer ends with the same advice: check species-specific guidance for your exact pet, and see a vet when anything looks wrong.

Cage & Tank Minimum Size Check: Is That Home Big Enough?

A clean guinea-pig cage with fresh bedding, a thermometer and a spray bottle on a bench in gentle morning light, tidy care mood — small-pet housing and daily care guide

Most small-pet housing problems are size problems, and most marketed cages are smaller than the welfare minimums for the animal inside them. This checker compares the home you have or are considering — floor space in square centimetres for land pets and birds, tank volume in litres for fish — against the widely cited minimum for a single adult of that species, and tells you honestly whether it passes, and by how much. The numbers here are floors, not ceilings: minimums keep an animal from obvious harm, and bigger is better for every species on this list, which is why the verdict always ends the same way — more room and daily exercise time are the cheapest health care a small pet can get.

❓ Cage & Tank Minimum Size Check: Is That Home Big Enough? — FAQ

Why do marketed cages so often fail the minimums?

Because minimums come from welfare research and marketed sizes come from what fits a shelf. A hamster cage sold with tubes and levels may still lack the deep uninterrupted floor area a hamster needs, and a rabbit hutch can be a fraction of the space a rabbit needs daily.

Do multi-level cages count as floor space?

No — levels do not replace floor area for rabbits, guinea pigs or hamsters, and they can be a fall hazard for some species. What matters is the usable single-level floor area, which is what this tool compares.

Is a bigger tank always better for fish?

Within reason, yes: more water volume dilutes waste and smooths temperature swings, which is why the classic mistake — a goldfish in a bowl — fails on every axis. Filter the volume you actually have and cycle the tank before adding fish.
